Called Le Grenier (the loft), this is one of 7 comfortable apartments carved out of a 15th-century stone farmhouse (Mas Pallarès). It is fully modernised and tastefully furnished. Its large terrace provides breathtaking views of the complex’s constantly blooming garden, swimming pool, and the Pyrenees foothills. The apartment is in Reynes, a small, sparsely populated Southern French town located near the larger historic market-town of Céret (La “Ville d’Art”), a favourite of artists .
Opportunities for walks and bike rides in the surrounding hilly countryside are endless and can be accessed directly from the apartment. The nearest boulangerie is within a 15-minute walk and a LIDL supermarket can be reached in 5 minutes by car.
Nearby Céret is a beautiful village nestled in the hills, with a medieval church and walls, a famous Saturday market, quality shops, fine restaurants, a music museum and an extraordinary modern art museum… and even a rugby field and bull ring. The art museum features rotating exhibits and a permanent collection of works by Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Salvadore Dali, and others who lived and painted in Ceret. On the Mediterranean shore, starting about 30 minutes away, are prominent cities like the regional capital, Perpignan, tourist favourites like Collioure (with a medieval castle and fortress, a beach front, and charming shopping streets), and wine-producing towns like Port Vendres and Banyuls-sur-Mer, whose mountainside vineyards run all the way down to the sea.
Further south, the coastal road enters Northern Spain and the Costa Brava, passing through Salvador Dali’s hometown (with his museum not far away in the town of Figueres), the charming old town of Girona with its annual flower festival. Just another hour away is the magnificent metropolis of Barcelona and all its treasures, including the La Sagrada Familia Basilica and the famous Gaudi (Guell) Park. (These wonderful Spanish sites can also be accessed via the Interstate expressway A9/AP7 that passes near Céret.) Also not to be missed are the inland treasures of the region: the foothills and peaks of the Pyrenees, including Mount Canigou, sacred in local tradition, charming mountainside villages like Castelnou and Eus (the latter above the Tet River facing Canigou), and monasteries like St. Martins high up on Canigou’s shoulder. All of these add up to Mas Pallarès being in the middle of a Southern France and Northern Spain paradise.
The apartment’s terrace and front door are approached through the garden and up an attractive spiral staircase. The good-sized terrace has a ceramic table with six chairs and 2 sun loungers from which to admire the views while sipping a glass of delicious local wine from one of the many local vineyards.
The front door leads directly from the terrace into the lounge where there is comfortable seating, a TV, DVD player, WiFi, and fold-out sofa bed. Through the next doorway is the kitchen/diner/family room with stunning high-beamed ceilings and large picture window. The room is well-equipped with space for dining and relaxing.
The two bedrooms and bathrooms lead from this main living area. The master bedroom has a double bed, plenty of storage and an adjacent shower room. The second bedroom has good storage, a beautiful en suite bathroom and 2 single beds, one having a roll-out trundle allowing a sleeping place for three.
The apartment benefits from air conditioning in the summer and central heating in the winter should there be cold weather. There is an extra charge only for central heating.
The property shares a lovely, secure pool (open from the beginning of June until the end of September), with great views and sun loungers, shared with the other 4 similar-sized apartments in the Mas. The pool measures approx. 10 by 4 m and has a deep and shallow end. Other shared facilities include a 4-person sauna (small charge applies), a table tennis table and an exercise room with treadmill, and a laundry. Washing machines are available for a small charge.
